Cosmetic Bonding & Shaping in Flint

Dr. Naik is happy to help people from Flint and the surrounding areas enjoy the aesthetic and health benefits of an attractive smile. That’s why she and her staff offer a number of cosmetic dentistry treatments, two of which are cosmetic bonding and tooth reshaping. These treatments are essentially two sides of the same coin: cosmetic bonding adds structure to a tooth, while tooth reshaping—also simply called shaping—removes a minimal amount of structure to give a tooth a more pleasing appearance.

Cosmetic Bonding in Flint, MI

You may already have some cosmetic bonding material in your mouth and not even realize it. The same composite resin material that is used for a tooth-colored filling is also used during cosmetic bonding treatment. The difference is that in the case of a filling, the material is used to repair a cavity, whereas with cosmetic bonding it is used to correct a cosmetic flaw.

Improve your Smile with Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding may be the ideal solution for any number of cosmetic imperfections. These include:

  • A chipped tooth
  • A tooth with a minor fracture
  • A moderately rotated tooth
  • Teeth with gaps in between them
  • A tooth that is permanently stained or discolored

The Cosmetic Bonding Procedure

In most cases, a local anesthesia is not needed for cosmetic bonding. First, Dr. Naik applies a mild abrasive to the enamel of your tooth. This roughens the surface, so dental cement can adhere better. Then, she directly applies the composite resin material and molds it to rebuild the tooth. A special curing light quickly hardens the material, and the process is repeated until the desired form is achieved. Finally, the tooth is polished to match your other teeth.

Tooth Shaping in Flint, MI

Alternatively, a tooth may need to be re-sized or reshaped in order to create a more aesthetically attractive appearance. In this case, Dr. Naik conservatively removes tooth enamel until the desired shape of the tooth is achieved. Tooth shaping can improve the length, size and overall alignment of a tooth within your smile. With tooth shaping, local anesthesia is usually necessary to prevent any discomfort or pain.
